Connecting to the FTP Servers

FTP Servers are a great way to put up your for the world to see, especially your potential boss who wants to see your portfolio before you work for him/her. Sometimes there might be a lot of problems with connecting or uploading files to the server especially if you're not the one who's hosting or "holding" the server. It can be very frustrating because sometimes you might not be able to upload your latest work for days. Sometimes your website might have errors and you can't upload your fixes because of the server not working.

How does Flash enhance your website?

Flash is a website enhancer in terms of advertisement/entertainment for the people who go on in. Flash animations catch an eye of the viewer/costumer, and thanks to them you will get more "traffic" on your website. You may also add sound to your animations but I wouldn't recommend it because if its too loud people will just turn it off and you will loose traffic/costumers. You can also make "moving" buttons which will make the website look more advanced, especially if you're trying to advertise for example video games. Flash is a very useful program for web site creation, and I myself look forward to using it in the future.

Flash animation

To make an object move/change shape or a combination of both in an animation keyframes and tweening are the key tools. Instead of drawing frame after frame you can just create minimum two keyframes and draw where you want the object to end up at the end of your animation and tweening makes the path of an object automatically from first frame to the end where the object has to end up. The same exact thing with shapes and a combination of those two.

Web Page Review

Name of person you reviewed:

Marcus Davila

What was the goal of the website?:

The goal of his website was to present the whereabouts of the Scholastic company.

What design principles and concepts did they use?:

There’s definitely a sense of unity in this website, the colors and fonts are all the same, you know instantly that the topic of the website is still the same. He also used emphasis to make certain things stand out for example the name of the charity on the “home page”. He also used a black colored font which made the paragraphs on each page stand out from the rest and you can easily notice and read them to find out what the charity is all about.

What design principles and concepts could they have used?

I think the colors he picked for the website background do not go well together, they create a sort of “confusion” to the eyes. The website is too bright, he should’ve checked the color wheel for adjacent colors and his website would’ve definitely looked better, but that’s only my opinion.

Did all the pages work correctly?:

Yes all the pages have worked correctly, no mistakes in links.

Did the web site have “good workflow” (links back and forth, consistency, etc)? How did they accomplish this?

This website had somewhat good workflow, the links do all work but as you read some sentences do not make any sense whatsoever, a lot of sentences are not capital which makes the website look very “unprofessional” and unclean looking.

If not, what could they have done to create a good workflow?

Edit the stuff he wrote before posting it, beginning of sentences capital, make the sentences correct.

What were the web site strengths?:

- All pages create a sense of unity

- All links working back and forth

- Use of some web design concepts and principles

What were the web site weaknesses?:

- Bad choice of colors for the website

- Paragraphs and countless mistakes made it look very unclean

- The website is very confusing

Extra credit: I just picked his website randomly from the list even though I know this person.

How does technology affect my life?

Technology affects my life in in a very positive way. Through technology I learn so much more than I would without it, but thats' a case in every persons life nowadays. It personally affects/and will affect my life in a very important sort of way because I'm aiming to major in art and web design in college. In my opinion web design is very fascinating and so is anything to do with multimedia. I love the kind of stuff you can create using programs like for example Adobe Fireworks. Its just amazing and I hope to have a job in the future involving that kind of stuff, its simply fascinating. The most important of all aspects of it to me is the constant use of your imagination to design and create stuff like websites , banners, logos, animations, and combining all those listed together to make each other better than they were before. So basically it comes down to that technology will be my life, in a bigger way than just a daily use of a cellphone by an average person. My skills in the field of technology will decide how successfull I am in life. It will be crucial for me to learn and exceed my knowledge of technology to be successfull in this field but I know I can do it.

Charity Logo

I created this logo for the Surfrider Foundation. This foundation fights to save our beaches and oceans, and pretty much anything to do with water and preserve it for the future. I decided to make a logo for saving the beaches. I tried incorporate the sunset to my logo title to make a sense of unity and the white font to make the small font stand out.

What is a page banner?

I opened Adobe Fireworks, then opened new project and changed the canvas width and height settings so I can make the canvas in a shape of the banner. Then I selected the rectangular tool and made a background and changed the color to dark gray. Then I changed the stroke of the background. After that I made the movies name and selected certain filters to make it fade away, I also changed the stroke of the letters to make a glow effect on the letters which makes it stand out from the rest of the banner. Then I imported two images into the file and pasted them on my banner after adjusting their size till I was satisfied with the way they look. I had to change layer position so the images don't go under the background and not on top of the title. Then I saved the image as .jpg.
